What Is a Router IP Address?

A router IP address (also called the default gateway) is the local network address assigned to your router. It is the address you type into a web browser to access the router's admin panel, where you can configure WiFi settings, security options, port forwarding, and more.

Most routers use a private IP address in the 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x range. The two most common default addresses are 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1, but some manufacturers use different addresses as shown in the table above.

How to Find Your Router IP Address

Windows

Open Command Prompt and run:

ipconfig

Look for "Default Gateway" under your active network adapter. The IP address listed is your router's address.

macOS

Open Terminal and run:

netstat -nr | grep default

Or go to System Preferences > Network > Advanced > TCP/IP and look for "Router."

Linux

Open Terminal and run:

ip route | grep default

The address after "via" is your router's IP address.

iPhone / iPad

  1. Go to Settings > WiFi
  2. Tap the (i) icon next to your connected network
  3. Look for "Router" under the IPv4 Address section

What If the Default IP Does Not Work?

If you cannot access your router using the default IP address, try these steps:

  1. Confirm the correct IP by running ipconfig (Windows) or ip route (Linux/macOS) as described above
  2. Make sure you are connected to the router's network (wired or WiFi)
  3. Try accessing the IP in a different browser or incognito window
  4. Check if the router uses a custom domain like routerlogin.net (NETGEAR) or tplinkwifi.net (TP-Link)
  5. Reset the router to factory defaults using the physical reset button (hold for 10-15 seconds)

Logging Into Your Router

  1. Open a web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)
  2. Type the router IP address in the address bar (not the search bar)
  3. Enter the username and password from the table above or from the label on your router

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common router IP address?

The most common default router IP address is 192.168.1.1, used by ASUS, Cisco, Linksys, NETGEAR, and many other brands. The second most common is 192.168.0.1, used by D-Link, TP-Link, and Tenda. You can confirm your router's IP by running ipconfig on Windows or ip route on Linux.

Why can I not access 192.168.1.1?

Common reasons include: you are not connected to the router's network, the router uses a different default IP, the admin panel is disabled, or there is a browser cache issue. Try using ipconfig to find the actual gateway IP, or try a different browser or incognito window.

What is the default router password?

Default passwords vary by brand. Common defaults are "admin/admin," "admin/password," or credentials printed on a label on the router itself. Check the reference table above for your brand. For security, always change the default password after first login.

How do I reset my router to factory defaults?

Locate the small reset button (usually a pinhole) on the back of the router. Press and hold it for 10-15 seconds using a paperclip or pin until the lights flash. The router will restart with factory default settings including the default IP address and password. Note that this erases all custom settings.
