A router IP address (also called the default gateway) is the local network address assigned to your router. It is the address you type into a web browser to access the router's admin panel, where you can configure WiFi settings, security options, port forwarding, and more.
Most routers use a private IP address in the 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x range. The two most common default addresses are 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.0.1, but some manufacturers use different addresses as shown in the table above.
Open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig
Look for "Default Gateway" under your active network adapter. The IP address listed is your router's address.
Open Terminal and run:
netstat -nr | grep default
Or go to System Preferences > Network > Advanced > TCP/IP and look for "Router."
Open Terminal and run:
ip route | grep default
The address after "via" is your router's IP address.
| IP Address | Used By |
|---|---|
192.168.1.1 | ASUS, Cisco, Linksys, NETGEAR, Huawei, Verizon, ZTE, Zyxel |
192.168.0.1 | D-Link, TP-Link, Tenda, Motorola, Sky, Virgin Media |
192.168.2.1 | Belkin |
192.168.10.1 | TRENDnet |
192.168.31.1 | Xiaomi |
192.168.88.1 | MikroTik |
10.0.0.1 | Xfinity (Comcast), some AT&T |
192.168.1.254 | AT&T (Arris) |
If you cannot access your router using the default IP address, try these steps:
ipconfig (Windows) or ip route (Linux/macOS) as described aboveFor a comprehensive guide, see: How to Find Your Router IP Address.
Once you know the IP address, follow these steps to access the admin panel:
| Brand | Login URL |
|---|---|
| NETGEAR | routerlogin.net or routerlogin.com |
| TP-Link | tplinkwifi.net |
| Linksys | myrouter.local or linksyssmartwifi.com |
| ASUS | router.asus.com |
| D-Link | dlinkrouter.local |
The most common default router IP address is 192.168.1.1, used by ASUS, Cisco, Linksys, NETGEAR, and many other brands. The second most common is 192.168.0.1, used by D-Link, TP-Link, and Tenda. You can confirm your router's IP by running ipconfig on Windows or ip route on Linux.
Common reasons include: you are not connected to the router's network, the router uses a different default IP, the admin panel is disabled, or there is a browser cache issue. Try using ipconfig to find the actual gateway IP, or try a different browser or incognito window.
Default passwords vary by brand. Common defaults are "admin/admin," "admin/password," or credentials printed on a label on the router itself. Check the reference table above for your brand. For security, always change the default password after first login.
Locate the small reset button (usually a pinhole) on the back of the router. Press and hold it for 10-15 seconds using a paperclip or pin until the lights flash. The router will restart with factory default settings including the default IP address and password. Note that this erases all custom settings.
